Penelope Murch is a ‘weak crew’ who can helm a boat at sea, but mostly daydreams away in the cockpit. This trip from the Isle of Bute to the Isle of Skye was her great adventure. It has been woven into a fantasy tale for children, initially to interest her grandchildren who sail with her, two at a time. Penny lives with her husband on a farm in the middle of England and has a conservatory full of beautiful plants and spiders that abseil down onto unwary friends! She is an expert on rhododendrons and cultivates a quintessentially English garden assisted by a busy flock of guinea fowl and Hazel, the golden retriever.
About The Book
Rascal is a sea urchin and lives in the sea. One day he climbs aboard the yacht that is moored to the buoy above his home. The buoy is his good friend Eva – three tons only – who is round, comforting and on top of her world. He is amazed at all that is around him and excitedly offers to sail as part of the crew. For this, he has to learn to be a boy; luckily he already looks like one even though his face is rather green. We follow his adventures in our world as he learns to sail with ‘Skipper’ and live like one of us. He joins in with all he meets as they make their way ’round the Mull of Kintyre and up north to the Isle of Skye. This new world is endlessly changing; it challenges and thrills him. By the way, please understand, Eva does not weigh three tons, it is just that she is so strong she can hold on to that much!
The final expert to come on Skipper’s boat in the boatyard was Ian, he is a specialist boat electrician and works for Boat Electrics. Here he is squeezing himself into an awkward space on the pilot berth where he is checking the wiring for the AIS, which stands [...]
This is Murray, he is an expert sailmaker. He makes his sails in a sail loft and repairs sails too at M.C.Sails. And his sister does boat upholstery, they are both perfectionists. Here he is helping to put the sails on Skipper’s boat ready for the summer. In t [...]
At last, skipper’s boat is going back to sea. Because of covid she missed last summer. But she is now on the trolley which will take her down to the water. She has just had her mast dropped in with the crane in the background, and now an expert has been lifted [...]
George is more or less the same age as RASCAL, who had his great sailing adventure with Skipper. At this age imagination often feels like reality. When young children read a book they can be there, alongside the hero or group of friends, part of the action and joinin [...]
Rascal shares his watery world with fishermen scattered up the Western Isles of Scotland from the River Clyde in the south to KInlockbervie in the north. Many of them fish for sea food that is exported to the Continent, but since Brexit, exports have been badly disru [...]
Here is a picture of the yacht on which Rascal was crew. I think he took this picture. The yacht is on a mooring at Otter Ferry, a beautiful spot in Loch Fyne complete with a pub. This yacht was built in the 1970s so it is quite old but a classic, and immaculate. It [...]
