George is
more or less the same age as RASCAL, who had his great sailing adventure with
Skipper. At this age imagination often feels like reality. When young children
read a book they can be there, alongside the hero or group of friends, part of
the action and joining in. I hope that sometime George will have the chance to
spend time in the Western Isles of Scotland and this little story will have
primed him to be aware of all the wonderful and interesting things there are to
see. The history of endless Viking raiding parties, superstitious stories of
witches and fairies told round wintertime fires. And there are the birds,
gannets plunging into the sea and endearing puffins. Rafts of newly hatched
Eider ducklings, no more than balls of fluff, but paddling hard after their
mother and with little beaks darting after this and that as they go.
